HISTORY

THE OPEN DOOR

The Call.

The Open Door began in July, 1981. Founded by a few men who met for a community adult Bible study on the vision of their leader, Pastor Jim Miller. Pastor Jim was approached by two of the study attendees with the idea of beginning a new church - a place to worship and grow in the Lord.

After much prayer and prompting from the Holy Spirit the church of 20 began its modest beginnings in the back room of a local restaurant on Sunday mornings and within two months the congregation had outgrown the space and moved to the Converse Town Hall for the next 10 months. A year later in 1982, they grew to more than 100 members, raising enough money to purchase property at the intersection of state roads 13 and 18. What once was a pole building, housing a business named “Smith Brothers”, had now become the fulfillment of dreams of a church home. With some TLC and renovation The Open Door Fellowship was up and running in its own facility with the promise of more service offerings, children’s church and worship to pursue the vision originally cast.

The Church.

The Open Door was established as a full Gospel church, stressing the fundamentals. The original philosophy: believing in the working of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, evangelism, and community outreach. Not much has changed as we believe that the church body should come together in unity with the individual gifts that have been given them to fulfill this call in our area of influence.

The Legacy.

Through the years there have been many people ministered to and sent out to fulfill the call of God on their lives. Pastor Jim was the head Pastor until he was called home to be with the Lord in December 2017. The last several months of his life Pastor Jason Smith, son-in-law of Pastor Jim, came on board to continue the work that was started 40 years ago.

If you are looking for a church home where you can grow and be a part of a family we invite you to come take a look and see where you fit into this body of Christ!
